UQ Chess Club – Up and Running!

May 25, 2013

Good news everyone!
UQ Chess Club has been up and running again for some time.
Checkout the new Facebook group for details.

UQ Chess Club In Receivership!

February 20, 2012

Due to the senior members of the chess club graduating or having to move on to other fancy grown-up things (e.g. work), the UQ Chess Club is now in receivership. If you know a group of friends who would like to come forward to take the club in a new direction, please contact uqchess@gmail.com so we can arrange a change of hands. The equipment is stored on campus and is easily accessible.

It has been a really good few years whilst we were all students and met lots of great players and friendly people – we hope you have just as much success as we did and continue the tradition! For the moment, we suggest you go to The Gap Chess Club (Friday nights), Cafe Checocho (Tuesday afternoons) or Brisbane Chess Club (Thursday nights) (see links in sidebar!) to scratch your chess itches. Alternatively, approach the UQ Games Club during market day this Wednesday and see what chess options are available there.

Thank-you all again for your attendance and we hope you keep playing the royal game for many years to come!

All the best.

UQ Chess.

Important Announcement

October 12, 2011

Unfortunately due to a number of issues with the room and other exec work commitments, UQ Chess Club will not be unable to meet for the last two weeks of the semester.

We will however be looking for new members in the New Year so please come along to Market Day during Orientation week of Semester 1 of 2012!

If you would like to scratch your chess itch, there is always the Brisbane Chess Club (Woollongabba), Cafe Checocho (West End) and The Gap Chess Club (Nothside) which are still operating up until Christmas.

Again, we do apologize for any inconveniences caused and hopefully we see you again in the New Year.

All the best for your studies and enjoy the break!

Sincerely,

UQ Chess Club Exec

See you on the week after!

NO CHESS TODAY (Friday, 2nd Sept.)

September 1, 2011

This weekend there is the Inter-college Chess Tournament being held as part of the annual Soiree. It is going to start at 8am at Duchesne college on Saturday the 3rd.

Since we have allowed the colleges to borrow all of our equipment for the event, we are forced to cancel our chess meeting today. We do apologise for such short notice but we only found out they could collect the boards on Thursday afternoon. As a result, we won’t have boards… and hence, our Friday meeting which will be deferred till next week.

Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and we hope you receive this message in time. For future reference, it might be a good idea to check this website on the day of the meeting to check something like this doesn’t come up again (though unlikely, you can never be too sure!).

Thanks and see you all next week!

Sign Up For Chess @ UQ Market Day TODAY!

July 27, 2011

Stop by UQ’s market day being held in the great court today to sign up for UQ chess for semester 2 (I suppose I don’t have to mention the free stationery from other stalls!).

Introduce yourselves to the friendly Ethan and Tuyen who will be manning the stalls and ask if you could sign up. You can even challenge one of them to a game if you can’t wait till next week!

Membership for the remainder of the year is $3. The time and place of the chess meetings will be announced in the coming days as we intend to hold our first meeting sometime next week (most likely Wednesday or Thursday 4-6pm – though stay tuned for updates!).

We hope you can make it and we look forward to seeing you across the tables soon!

Come sign up today!

Semester 1 Chess Finished!

June 7, 2011

Hi All,

Thanks to all of you who attended last week’s meeting – as it was our last of Semester 1! We will be back in Semester 2 and we look forward to having new players join the club. We will have a stall at market day so be sure to come along and sign up if you haven’t already done so.

If you would like to play chess over the break, we suggest you check out the Brisbane Chess Club and The Gap Chess Club who have regular tournaments throughout the year. Cafe Checocho in West End also have small chess meet-ups for social games every Tuesday night. They have boards and pieces but you’ll have to bring your own clocks if you want timed games.

Stay tuned for our next announcement closer to the start of semester two so until then, we wish you all the best in your studies and a most excellent holiday after your exams.
